The Epic Tragedy of King Daksha's Yajna
Located in the heritage suburb of Kankhal, approximately 4 km south of Har Ki Pauri, stands the historic Daksheswar Mahadev Temple. This sacred ground is immortalized in Hindu cosmology as the exact location where King Daksha Prajapati (father of Devi Sati) performed the grand Brihaspatisava Yajna to which he deliberately refused to invite Lord Shiva.
Unable to bear the public insult of her divine husband, Devi Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial sacrificial fire at Sati Kund. In grief and anger, Lord Shiva pulled a strand of his matted locks, creating Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali, who destroyed the yajna and decapitated King Daksha. Shiva subsequently restored Daksha to life with a goat's head, sanctifying the grounds as an eternal abode of Mahadev.
